Fostering Team Building and Creative Thinking!

3:25 PM

When I taught gifted resource, I did several team building/creative thinking projects at the beginning of the year as a way to informally assess my students.  This particular year I taught 1st and 2nd graders, and they came from multiple classrooms.  This project helped them learn to work together in our resource gifted class and allowed me to informally assess their thinking ability.

Each group of students was given a container of blocks- ...basically whatever I had on hand/collected.

The scenario was that a company needed help designing a new toy for the upcoming holiday season.  Students brainstormed their ideas and created different prototype options using the blocks.

When students finished, they created print advertisements and demonstrated their creations to their classmates.  This project was truly engaging, and set them up for future Thinking Skills activities.  Although I did it at the beginning of the year, it could easily be done in December, closer to the holidays.

This project can be adapted quite easily.  For the sake of convenience, I've included project pages as part of a Creative Thinking resource.  Check it out at Spivey Sparks here, if you're interested.

Join in the conversation!  What are your favorite group projects to inspire creative thinking?

All the Best,
