Hey y'all! I'm Erin from A Library and Garden and this is my first post over here on Conversations from the Classroom! I am a Tennessee girl with a love of literature, little people, and unicorns! I am in my 6th year of teaching, the last 5 of which have been in kindergarten.
I just love kindergarten. Their excitement and love of learning is contagious. And let me tell you, they LOVE holidays and celebrating. We talked about Groundhog's Day today, and it was like they had won a trip to Disney World! But today I want to share some of my favorite activities and books surrounding my favorite holiday to celebrate with my kindergarteners.....you guessed it! Valentine's Day!
It's hard to believe, but Valentine's Day is just two weeks away! My absolute favorite activity to bust our during the first few weeks in February is my Valentine's Day Interactive Notebook Supplements. If your kiddos already use interactive notebooks, these can be seamlessly integrated into what you already have or you can use templates that you already own. If you do not use interactive notebooks, you can still use these supplements on their own. I love that these notebook supplements are engaging and can be used for ANY Valentine's themed book. You can do these as a whole group or have students complete independently depending on your students' needs.
A few of the skills included are:
ASKING AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS USING KEY DETAILS IN A TEXT
DETERMINING THE MEANING OF UNKNOWN WORDS
FINDING INFORMATION USING PICTURES AND TEXT
TELLING THE AUTHOR'S PURPOSE
RETELLING FAMILIAR STORIES USING KEY DETAILS
OPINION WRITING
I got some of my favorite Valentine's Day books out of storage today. I love all of the books about love and friendship, and any of these can be used in conjunction with an interactive notebook! Here is a snapshot of some of the books on my shelf. I always love introducing new books to my kids, so I would love for you to share more books that I can add to my collection in the comments below!
