Are you as excited as I am for Día de los Muertos? Then you've come to the right place! Whether you're a teacher or a parent, teaching about this holiday is so much fun! Given that there are so many Día de los Muertos Teaching Resources, I have compiled a list of my favorites that I hope will help. What is Día de los Muertos?
Before you start throwing out activities related to Día de los Muertos, it is important that your students know the meaning of the holiday. The following short video clip gives a nice background of the celebration:
This is another one of my favorites. Although there are no words, the meaning is very clear to students (and adults!) of all ages:
Lessons and Printables
Now that everyone has an idea about what the holiday is, it's time to learn some more! Here are some great lessons you can do with your students:
- First, Lesson Planet has a huge collection of resources for Día de los Muertos.
- Second, this printable PDF Lesson Plan (originally written for 5th grade, but says it can be adapted for grades 3-12) is fantastic! Students will work in small groups of 4-5 students to create a Día de los Muertos display inspired by traditional Day of the Dead offerings. Includes templates and excellent instructions.
- Also, this is an amazing resource from MisCositas: Thematic curriculum unit about the Day of the Dead for intermediate Spanish students: This interdisciplinary unit comes with lesson plans, worksheets, and resources for celebrating the Day of the Dead in your classroom. Downloadable and FREE!!!

- Further, Homeschool Super Freak has this awesome collection of 24 Day of the Dead Activities (Dia de Muertos) for Kids
