Breakout Into the New Year

3:00 AM

So we're almost a month into the new year. Everyone has settled in, and maybe some of us are even keeping up with our resolutions (I'm determined to see at least 3 Broadway shows this year). Our classrooms have gotten back into the swing of things too.  But if your classroom is like mine, we're kind of hitting the winter doldrums. The weather is cold and dreary.  We miss recess often because of snow or freezing temps.  It's a little hard to get excited about the day's lessons.

I have found the coolest way to spice up those long days when both you and the kids tend to drift off. Breakout Edu is the latest craze hitting classrooms across the country and you should be looking into it.  Breakout Edu is like an escape room in your classroom.  The kids have to work together in groups to solves puzzles and riddles to get codes to open locks and breakout of the box.

So how do you get started with  Breakout Edu boxes? Their website offers a pre-packaged box that has all the locks and extras you need. They also have a list of what you need if you want to put your own box together. I got 3 boxes and I break my class up into 6 groups.  Two groups are assigned to each box and each gets their own color, that way they know what clues and prizes to grab.  It would work well with one box, you'd just need more colors! 🤓

Now for the fun part. Where do you get the games? Once again, the website offers plenty of games on all different levels, but I like to make my own games. Last month, we finished reading  Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library  It's a great book about a bunch of spunky kids who have to solve puzzles and riddles to be the first one to escape from the library. Imagine how excited they were to solve puzzles and riddles based on the book and their classmates!  It was a smash hit.

Some advice....be patient. It took me a while to figure out how to set up the room and clues. I highly recommend taking a box home and using your family as guinea pigs to make sure you clearly understand how to complete the game. Good luck breaking out in your classroom!
