A Way to Learn About Your World:
Then and Now!
When I was teaching I loved having my first graders write a biography of a favorite family member, often their mother or father.
Writing a biography tied right in with our Language Arts Curriculum and our Social Studies Theme of Past and Present.
At that time of the year, most first graders are able to write in complete sentences. Plus, I made it into one of our favorite Family Projects.
I would send home a list of questions they could use to interview the person. After they completed the interview questions, I asked them to write a simple report using the answers in complete sentences. Since the family was involved, it could be typed on the computer.
Additionally, I asked the student to bring in pictures of the person, or they could draw a picture.
In class each student would read their report. ( I had a microphone, so that we could hear them read their report.) Being the end of the school year, I would invite the family member to join us for the presentation, followed by a snack. It was wonderful to watch the pride each student had when reading the biography about their favorite family member. 👪
The student and their guests would talk about schools then and now. My students were surprised that their parent would have to be in a classroom without computers and other technology, such as cell phones. The guests would be amazed about how schools had changed, but still valued educating children. It was always a win, win situation for all of us!😁
Here are a few questions you might include in an interview.
- What is your full name?
- When is your birthday?
- Where were you born?
- How many brothers and sisters did you have?
- What schools did you go to?
- When you were in first grade what were two things you liked to do?
- What games did you play in first grade?
- Did you like to read books?
- Did you have any favorite book or author?
- What was your favorite subject?
- What didn't you like about first grade?
- What was your favorite lunch?
- Did you get to have recess everyday or go to PE?
- Did you have computers in school?
- Who was your favorite singer and or song?
- What is one thing you remember about being in elementary school?
- What is your job now? What did you learn in school that helps you with your work?
Finally, remember a biography can be done at any time of year, to coincide with a unit of study, such as careers.
