Build a Garden of Readers

7:00 AM

How do you help develop reading, writing, and vocabulary with beginning readers?

1. Focus on blend phonics. The words are sounded out from left to right one letter at a time. Check out my blog post on Blending Made Easy if you like to understand this process.

2. Decide if it a real or nonsense word and make up a sentence to illustrate the meaning of the word.

3. Sort it by vowel sound. This really focuses the students on the letter sound relationship and will help with reading in the long run!

4. Write the words. It takes learning from decoding to encoding.

Using this steps has made such a difference in the reading ability of my class. It is fun to use these Short Vowel CvC Words in May to build a garden of readers!
