DIY Colorful Sensory Bin

12:02 AM

Sensory bins are a great way to engage students with a high interest activity that can be easily incorporated into your day. A couple months back, I shared a couple simple tips to engage multi-sensory learners here. You can easily incorporate a sensory bin into those tips by placing task cards in the bin for students to choose from. When using task cards attached to books via velcro, have students hide the cards after initially answering the question, in the sensory bin. When you complete the story, have students retrieve the task cards from the sensory bin to reassess what they recall from the story.

I love to use this new Recollections storage container that I purchased from Michael's Craft Store as a portable sensory bin that has a storage tray inside.

To create brightly colored pasta to place within your sensory bin (as featured above), you will need the following:

  • Dry pasta (I used macaroni)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Food coloring
  • Tray for drying

I place the pasta in a gallon sized plastic bag, however, you can use a bowl if you choose. Simply add 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol combined with food coloring. Stir pasta. Add additional food coloring until you reach your desired shade. The florescent food coloring looks great but you can use whatever you have on hand. In the photos, I used primary colors that I had in my pantry. After mixing, lay the pasta out on a tray (I love using trays I picked up at the dollar store) to dry. The pasta will dry within an hour or two.

Voila! You have your very own sensory bin. I like to mix a couple batches of colored pasta for a rainbow effect. This particular sensory bin pictured has coins that I picked up at the dollar store mixed in for St. Patrick's Day. If you would like to learn more about how I made this, check out the video here.

You can find the Literacy Sensory Bin Task Cards that you can use with any book here.

I would love to hear tips and tricks that you have for sensory bins. Leave your favorites in the comments below!
